Sage bush is the common name for many species in the genus Artemisia. Unrelated to sage proper, Salvia species, this genus is more commonly used in rituals, cleansing, medicine and those sorts of things. Note that some species are poisonous, such as wormwood, and some species may cause skin irritation. This sage is generally used as a burned incense type manner to cleanse a place of bad energies. The foliage of sage bush are wrapped and folded into a stick and tied together, called “smudge sticks”. After being left to dry, they are often left as is for a wonderful scent in the house, or they are burned and smoke wafted around the area to rid evil spirits. This tradition is interesting as it has developed with similar species across the world.
