Litsea cubeba, or mountain pepper, sometimes gets confused with cubeba pepper, which is related to long pepper and peppercorns (Piper species). Mountain pepper, however, is not a shade loving vine that grows up trees or along the ground, rather it is a fairly good sized tree growing in the mountains of Taiwan and other tropical to sub-tropical countries. Here in Taiwan the trees flower in May and harvest season lasts all summer. The berries are prepared and dried giving off one of the most lovely lemon scents one can experience. Think of a pepper that looks more or less like black peppercorns, without the heat and a strong burst of lemony gourmet heaven.
